From Failed Idea to Profitable Product: What I Learned from Failure

The biggest insecurity we bloggers face is the question of whether anybody is actually going to buy our product. We can’t give away our content forever, and those Google ads are hardly going to pay the bills.

That’s why every blogger should offer his or her own product. You can recommend other products without seeing a noticeable return. The biggest return on effort is from your own product, whether it’s an ebook, a service, or a piece of software. But the creation of your own product creates a different kind of fear.

The fear of failure

Everybody fears failure. It’s instilled in us from an early age. Most people don’t like losing, and try to avoid it at all costs. And if you’re going to create something to sell, the fear of it failing becomes all too real. Many times it becomes so real that people don’t even go through with their plans at all.

But failure is just a stepping stone towards success. If you can use the lessons you learned from a failed product, there’s always a better probability of success in your next venture.

What I learned from failure

My first product was pretty much a failure. It didn’t sell at all, and even though people thought the idea was good, when it came time to buy, no one did.

It’s tough to deal with failure, but I trekked on an created a new product—to great success. I didn’t get rich overnight, but on my small niche scale, I did pretty well.

So what did I learn from my first failure that you can use to your business success?

Do your market research

You not only need to know your niche, you also need to know what the people in your niche reallywant. A great idea is only good if people want to buy it.

I had this great idea for a productivity tool that, in the end, nobody really wanted. Sure, some people bought it, but it wasn’t a sustainable income. Instead I focused my effort on what I knew people wanted: information. I assumed that people would rather pay for information that they could use in their own endeavors.

Lesson learned: People would rather invest in information than anything else. In a specialty niche like mine, my readers wanted to learn techniques to better their own productions. They didn’t really need a productivity tool to keep track of their home recordings. Their computer already did that.

Decide to go digital

The first product I created was a hardcover book. The buying process was tedious, there were extra shipping costs, and my variable costs were relatively high, so most of my profit was eaten by the costs. I needed to keep the costs of the book down, but I also needed to recoup the costs of each book sold. Even though I used a print-on-demand service, the extra costs just weren’t worth it.

Lesson learned: Go digital. I decided to create an informative digital ebook, Mixing Strategies, which was only sold via direct download. Even though the model of selling ebooks has been around for a long time, I needed to learn why it was such a good idea on my own. With digital downloads, the variable costs of each download are non-existent so you can turn a profit quicker and more easily than with hardcopy products.

Find an outsourcer

I’m not much of a designer. I wanted my first product to look nice, so I outsourced my design work to Pakistan on the cheap. $100 later, I had a really nice looking product that I could sell. If I had done it myself it would have either never have been finished, or it would have looked very amateurish. By using outsourced freelance work, I was able to create a much nicer looking product than I ever could have myself, regardless of whether it would sell or not.

Lesson learned: Delegate tasks to those who know better. When it came time to create a new product, I had learned how easy it is to outsource work. I had learned how to ask for specific details and how to sift through the endless numbers of graphic designers out there. I was fine with paying for professional results, because I knew I would be saving myself a lot of time and effort—time and effort I could use towards other things.

Pre-market your product

I failed to create a lot of buzz around my first launch. I didn’t really talk about the product at all until I launched it. No wonder nobody bought it: I hadn’t built up any suspense about it. Whether you call it creating buzz, pre-marketing, or pre-selling, it was clear that I failed at it. Maybe if I had created a little more buzz, somebody would have told me that the product wasn’t such a great idea in the first place.

Lesson learned: Talk about your products. While I wrote my ebook I often asked my newsletter subscribers and other readers what they thought. I pitched them the table of contents and asked them questions that they would like answered in a book. I created buzz and anticipation by talking about the creation of the product. The result? I started selling copies almost before I had sent out the initial launch newsletter. I created so much anticipation over the months preceding the launch that people bought it immediately.

Offer launch discounts and build urgency

Not only did I not create any buzz for my failed product, I failed to create any fanfare around the launch. I simply launched the product, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best. The best didn’t come. I didn’t create any sense of urgency, so nobody saw any point in buying it right away.

Lesson learned: Not only do you have to create anticipation, but once you launch, you have to create an urgency to buy. For the first ten days, I offered my product at a discounted price. This created a need to buy in my readers. They wanted my product because I had created so much anticipation, and now they could get it at a discounted price. The result? The sales kept rolling in.

Failure creates success

I wouldn’t have learned any of those lessons if I hadn’t created my first product. Even though it failed in most ways (it does still sell every now and then!), I still regard it as an accomplishment.

If it weren’t for this first product, I wouldn’t have learned how to find a demand, how to find great outsourcers, how to create buzz and ultimately, how to generate profitable sales. In my case, my initial failure only helped create my success.

Whatever it is, Facebook will be part of our lives for the next few years. My advise is, use Facebook wisely and don't abuse it.

Yes, yesterday was what we have gone through. Some managed to complete an unfinished job or assignment. Others maybe found a long-lost friend. I found an internet guru whom I feel can bring me to a higher level than I am now.
The short time with Derek Gehl convince me that I will be able to improve myself in internet marketing. His website also convince me that he can give me the boost I need. His buttons on the website like 'Find a Product Idea' and 'Market Your Product' fascinates me. His profile on Wikipedia is not detail enough but his explanation of himself convince me that he can lead me for the next few months on my mission.
Maybe for some, the first few days of the new year is the time to set their resolution. For me, I set 1.1.11 as the starting point to make money and 11.11.11 as the time to review my target. I have set that on 12.12.12, I will find my financial freedom. The earlier you set your target, the faster you can get started, finding the strategies you need to work on so that you can achieve the target which you have set.
To some, the time set maybe too short. Nevertheless, I feel that 12 months maybe enough for me to make some substantial amount to have my financial freedom.

The set up part is relatively easy and involves just a few mouse clicks. That’s the first thing I liked about it. There are no complicated configurations in the setup process and things are very much self explanatory. If, however, you do find yourself not being able to figure out the simple set-up process, they have a video tutorial to guide you through it.

Then there is that SSL certification thing. Ever since FaceBook started its mandatory SSL requirements for third party applications, I have had to find a replacement for some of the existing applications I have been happily using all this while. I am happy to say that PagePressApp is SSL certified.

The other thing I like is that it syndicates my blog posts on two different locations on my Fanpage. The first is my wall which will also make it visible to my fans’ new feeds. Then, there is also a separate tab on my Fanpage for my blog. This is where users can see a list of my blog posts without all the other things on my wall which can get really busy sometimes. It is basically an archive of all the blog posts that have been syndicated on my Fanpage wall.

Now I can share useful content and connect with my fans with just a one time effort. I don’t even have to log into my FaceBook account to do it. The application automates the entire process for me.

However, this application only works if your blog is running on a WordPress platform. You won’t be able to use it if you use say, blogger.com for your blog. This is because WordPress is currently the most widely used blogging platform due to its ease of customization and the wide varieties of plugins that are created for it.

I’ve recently started using PagePressApp. It’s an application that allows me to connect my Facebook Fanpage to my Wordpress blog.

There are a couple of reasons I started using this application.

First, a lot of my fans on Facebook don’t know about my blog, even though I’ve listed it on my Fanpage info tab. I guess most people don’t bother to look.

Secondly, if I update my blog, I have to manually insert the link on my Fanpage, each time to share the blog post with my fans. Sometimes I forget and my fans, if they follow my blog; will miss out on any important updates.

So I started looking for ways to automate this. There are so many apps out there that allow people to share blog posts or news reports at a click of a button on Facebook but it’s very hard to find one that works for a Facebook Fanpage.

The thing that I like most about PagePressApp is that it’s practically a set and forget thing. I integrate it to my Facebook Fanpage, enter my preferred configurations and it continues to syndicate my blog posts on my Fanpage whenever I update my blog.

Plus, it syndicates my blog posts on two locations on my Fanpage – on my Fanpage wall and a separate tab for my blog where my fans can go to see my blog posts minus all the clutter on my Fanpage wall.

It is really easy to integrate the application to your Facebook account. The configurations are basically self explanatory but they do have video tutorials as well in the unlikely event that you find yourself lost so that department is basically taken care of.

So now my fans know that I have a blog and I get to share valuable content with them right there on my Facebook Fanpage.

9 Ways to Save Money on Laundry by Parenting Squad

It's that time of year again. The kids are heading off to school, and you have to pay a little more attention to the laundry. Your hampers will be overflowing with sports gear and school clothes in no time, but getting your kids' clothes clean doesn't have to be expensive. 1. Wash Less Often

You don't have to wash your clothes after every wear. Depending on the item, you can go days before it has to be tossed in the hamper. For example, you only need to wash your jeans every four to five wears. And certain tops can be worn up to three times before washing. 2. Wash Only Full Loads

You may use less water when washing a half a load versus a full load, but you are using the same amount of energy. Don't waste it. Always fill the washer before starting it up.

3. Wash in Cold Water

Up to 90% of the energy used to wash your clothes is just to heat up the water. So wash them with cold water, and you'll be saving cold hard cash.

4. Use Shorter Wash Cycles

Unless your clothes are filthy, skip the heavy-duty cycle in favor of a shorter cycle. This will help you use less energy and save money in the end.

5. Use Less Detergent

Be careful how much detergent you are dumping into the washer. Most of us fill to a line on the cup that we can barely see, and some of us skip the cup all together. You only need about a ¼ of a cup, so read the directions on the bottle of detergent and don't waste your cash by wasting detergent.

6. Skip the Dryer Sheets

I don't use dryer sheets. After my daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, I tried to rid our home of anything that carried a chemical odor. (Even if your dryer sheets smell like lavender, they aren't actually made of lavender.) I didn't want her little lungs inhaling chemicals all day long. I haven't missed them one bit.

7. Skip the Dryer

Even in the colder months, you can hang your clothes to dry. You can use drying racks or your shower curtain rod. I've even been known to throw damp clothes over the top of a door. Any time you can skip using the dryer means you are using less energy and spending less money.

8. Remove Lint From the Dryer

If you do use the dryer, make sure you keep it clean. Don't forget to clean the lint trap and the dryer vent, too. It is a money hazard when lint builds up in these two spots because moist air can't escape and the dryer has to work harder.

9. Avoid the Dry Cleaner

If you can, avoid buying clothes that are dry clean only. But don't fret if you get home from the store and find that all of your daughter's must-have back-to-school clothes are dry clean only. Some of them can be hand washed in the sink and hung to dry, while the rest can be tossed in the dryer with a little Dry Cleaner's Secret. It only takes 20 minutes to clean up to five garments, so don't leave them in longer than you need to.

And there you have it. Clean clothes at a fraction of the cost — and more money to spend on you. Happy laundering!

Twitter Now Available in Five New Languages by Stan Schroeder

Twitter has announced the launch of the service in five new languages: simplified and traditional Chinese, Hindi, Tagalog and Malay.

This brings the total number of languages Twitter is available in to 17.

Like many other online services, Twitter is mostly relying on volunteers for translation. To join in, head on over to Twitter’stranslation center.

Is It Worth To Earn A Marketing Degree?

1. How much is a marketing degree worth?

Well-trained marketing graduates can expect to earn comfortable salaries. The U.S. government’s National Compensation Survey from 2005 indicates that managers in marketing and advertising were among the most highly compensated white collar workers and earned an average of $45.36 an hour. The mean income for marketing teachers was almost the same, $45.73.

In 2009, Salary.com reported the following average wages for marketing jobs:

Marketing director $142,130
Market research analyst, Level I $48,043
Market research analyst, Level II $55,651
Market research analyst, Level III $70,322
Market research manager $92,630

The above figures do not include bonuses and benefits such as health care insurance. Many marketing employees have significantly higher incomes than the average American worker.

Also, business careers tend to feature many opportunities for advancement; note the salary progression for the market research analyst positions above. Earning a degree online is a great way to stay employed while preparing for a promotion.

2. Which marketing degrees can be earned online?

All levels of marketing degrees – associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral – can be earned through distance learning. Certificates are also available to undergraduate and graduate students. These can enhance a general business degree to show expertise in a given area of marketing. For instance, Drexel Universityoffers an online six-course certificate program in Retail Leadership.

3. How does online education work?
Online degree programs can be completed 100% online or through a blend of online and face-to-face learning. The latter are more accurately referred to as blended or hybrid courses. When a course is fully online, all of the following are accomplished over the internet: enrolling; listening to lectures; downloading readings; submitting work; communicating with the instructor and other students; taking examinations; and receiving grades. Some schools require distance learners to take proctored exams on campus or at a more convenient location, such as an affiliated university or community center.

Of course, certain subject areas cannot be learned entirely online. Some professions require new entrants to have completed internships, residencies, or student teaching. These requirements can usually be met in the student’s hometown while classes are taken online.

4. How long does it take to earn a marketing degree online?

Online students have a major advantage over traditional students: greater flexibility. Since online students can attend virtual classes at any time and without commuting, they often find it possible to take accelerated programs. This means that going to school online is sometimes faster than going to school on campus.

Of course, any program can be accelerated by the application of transfer credits. Most schools accept about six transfer credits or the equivalent of two courses. However, some universities offer more generous transfer policies.

Earning an associate’s degree in marketing online will generally take one or two years. A bachelor’s degree will usually require three or four years of study, but there are exceptions. For instance, Colorado Tech’s online bachelor’s program in marketing can be completed in about 2 ½ years with no prior college experience. MBA programs in marketing vary considerably in length, but students usually take core business courses one year and focus on marketing courses during a second year.

5. Which schools offer online marketing degrees?

Fortunately for marketing students, online business programs were among the first to gain widespread acceptance among employers. They’re offered by long-established community colleges, state schools, and prestigious private universities. Chances are good that a school you already know and trust has moved many of its degree programs online. 6. Which online marketing degree programs are reputable?

Before applying to an online marketing program, make sure that it’s accredited by CHEA, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Thousands of schools in the U.S. are accredited, and their accredited status indicates that they meet standards required by employers and other accredited schools. It’s also a good idea to select a program that’s endorsed by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Endorsed programs mention AACSB in their degree program descriptions.

7. What is studied in an online marketing program?

Depending on the program, marketing students study one or more of the following aspects of marketing in depth: advertising and public relations; market research; non-profit marketing; product management; and retail. Online students typically use the same textbooks and have the same professors as on-campus students.

Sample curriculum: Bachelor’s students in top-ranked Florida Tech’s online business administration programcan concentrate on marketing. Their curriculum includes 94 core credits and 30 elective credits. Students begin with a course entitled “Mastering e-Learning” and a course in basic computer skills or business computer skills. Their other core courses are in English, accounting, law, management, psychology, and other areas relevant to business. Elective courses for the online marketing degree have titles such as “Entrepreneurial Marketing,” “International Marketing,” and “Advertising Management.”

Blogging As Usual

My friends,

I am enjoying the last few days in Monrovia, Liberia after spending the last 11 months. My duty will end on the 30th of September unless the mission allow me to extend and see through the Elections of Liberia which is due on the 11th of October.

I have spent some time in Harper but the rest was in Monrovia. The situation now is calm. The economic activities are going on as usual. The rebuilding process is also going on. The political parties are busy planning their strategies on how to capture as many seats as possible, ensuring that their Standard Bearers and Vice Bearers capture the Presidential and the Vice President seats.

I will publish my experiences as well as my views when I get home. Due to the limited excess of this service, i feel that it would be wise for me to publish my posts later.

Turning 50

Get e-mail as texts: You can have email messages sent to your phone as texts, which can be convenient. Maybe your RSS reader can forward content as e-mail, and you want to be alerted to updates in a rarely used feed.

Enter your 10-digit mobile phone number prefix and carrier suffix, such as 2223334444@txt.att.net. Here's a list of other carriers. Also, read "10 Killer Texting Tricks" for more SMS goodness.

Send text messages from AIM: Your PC can send texts to a mobile phone for free. Within an AIM client, send a text to the number with + and the country code prefix. For example, a San Francisco message might be directed to +14151112222.

eBay and Craigslist

Mind your eBay reserve: Tiptoe through starting prices when auctioning off an item to save money. If you're pricing something near eBay's thresholds of $1, $10, $25, $50, and $200, cut back by just a cent to save yourself a little cash, which can add up for high-volume sales.

If you list something at $199.99 for example, eBay charges $1. For a $200 starting price, eBay charges $2. For more information, check out the eBay Fees page.

Spell poorly: If you're buying hard-to-spell product, try searching for misspelling or common typos ("playstaion"), or enter * as a text wildcard such as "playst*". (eBay will find hits for one or more additional characters.)

You might stumble over auctions that others haven't found--which means less bidding competition. If selling, enter a few of those errors into your listing to snare misspelled searches (though probably not in the title--you don't want to disappear from the correctly-spelled search results).

Search Craigslist with RSS: Keeping an eye out for a free leather couch on Craigslist? Save yourself from searching every 10 minutes by setting up an RSS feed for the search results by entering your search within Craigslist and clicking the RSS button in the lower-right to add it to your RSS reader of choice.

Entertainment Extras: YouTube, Hulu, Flickr, iTunes, and Xbox Live

Download YouTube and Hulu: Watch online videos away from the Internet by downloading them to your PC. The simplest methods usually work best for noncommercial video, such as random YouTube home movies. But at press time, I got StreamTransport to save videos even from Hulu. Play clips back with VLC.

Watch high-quality YouTube: Bump up the resolution in supported clips. Just click the number and arrow in the play bar; it's likely 360p by default. Pick a higher number for the best quality.

Link straight to part of a YouTube clip: Instead of sending people to the beginning of a clip, you can create a link that plays from a spot in the middle that you choose. Just add #t=[number]m[number]s to the end of the URL, such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf6IQgFxpIA#t=00m11s to begin 11 seconds in.

Initiate console game downloads: Microsoft's Xbox Live site might seem superfluous on a PC. However, you can queue up downloads and activate purchases through your computer, and when you log in back on the console, they'll transfer automatically.

Upload to Flickr through e-mail: Instead of manually uploading photos, you can send them through e-mail. This can work well from an old mobile phone to quickly send pictures from a PC. In the Emails & Notifications tab of the Account options, click Create an upload-to-flickr email address to configure the feature.

Search and link to iTunes content in a browser: The iTunes store lives in its own application, but you can access specific apps, songs, searches, or anything else with a URL. To search, try http://itunes.com/[search term] such as http://itunes.com/evernote. If your search comes up with a single result (as in this example), you'll jump to that page within iTunes. To copy a direct URL to an iTunes store page, right-click an item within iTunes, and choose Copy Link.

Fix Your Facebook

Hide application notices: Are you sick of Farmville, Mafia Wars, and other Facebook apps cluttering your feed? Mouse over the entry, and click Hide. You'll block those alerts from your wall.

Invite a list of friends to an event: You don't have to manually click a bunch of friends to send event invitations. Instead, create a list first. Click Friends in the left column, and use Create a List on top to pick certain friends. When making an event invitation, click the Filter Friends tab to show only the list. Click Select All.

Hide content from certain contacts: Keep your mom and work acquaintances from seeing messages intended for your inner circle. Click the lock privacy icon, and choose Customize.

From there, you can hide the post from specific people, or show it only to your entourage. For more on Facebook's privacy settings, read "Protect Your Privacy With the New Facebook Settings."

Cut to the core: The Lite version of Facebook strips away most of the clutter in the main design. It's great if you're on a slow Internet connection, browsing on a netbook, or just want to avoid the usual mess.

Browse to lite.facebook.com to give it a try, and click the link at the top of the page to toggle back to the full site.

Twitter Tweaks

Schedule tweets: You can set up a schedule for your Twitter account, so posts can go up while you are asleep, or--heaven forbid--are away from your gadgets.

This way, you'll be able to tweet across time zones (so your international followers won't have to scroll all the way down to hear from you, perhaps), and keep your Twitter account active when you need to focus on a project.

Many sites offer this feature, including HootSuite, SocialOomph, and Twuffer. I like Twuffer for its simplicity, although the others have additional features, such as Facebook support.

Get deals by following companies: Some of your favorite companies might post deals to Twitter. You'll have to sort away businesses that spam followers too often, but I like following @amazonmp3, @amazongames, and @woot.

If you really want to step up your hustle, make a new Twitter account specifically for landing freebies so the spam won't get to your real one. Keep it all straight with a twitter client that manages multiple accounts, such as Tweetdeck. Also, check out "How to Win Prizes on Twitter" for more tips.

Learn about current events: Look for your local Happen.in feed, which charts Twitter chatter based on your location.

If a bunch of people in the same area post "bridge out," Happen.in will repost the details so that you keep on track of regional events and trends. The Twitter Website includes similar functionality in the right-hand column. Adjust those Trending settings to set it for your area.

Expand URLs: Shortened links could send you to a funny YouTube clip, a popular article in the New York Times, or a site designed to riddle your PC with malware. Use a Greasemonkey script (a Firefox add-on) and just hover your mouse over the cryptic URL to see the full version at the bottom of the window.

Google Gimmicks

Search within a site: Narrow down your search results to a single site. Type (search query) site:(domain); an example would be entering: video card tips site:pcworld.com to find pages only at that location. You can even limit results to within sections of a site, as in this example: twitter site:pcworld.com/businesscenter.

Search for file types: Maybe you want to track down a certain document that's a PDF. Enter your usual search string plus filetype:pdf to find only those pages. This method also works with PostScript (ps), Office docs (doc, ppt, xls), Rich Text (rtf), Plain Text (txt), and more. You can find a list of searchable file types here.

Exclude results: Include a minus sign to exclude certain results. Suppose you want to find news about Apple unrelated to the iPad. Type Apple -iPad. You can also combine the previous tips, such as Apple -iPad -site:apple.com and Apple -iPad -PDF.

Get local details: Forget manual time conversion; just enter time [city] (as in Time Tokyo) to get the current local time. Or try weather [city] for a forecast. For more local details, try [city] map, movies [city or ZIP code], and [restaurant name or cuisine] [city or ZIP code]. This works for a few other regular search strings, like Weather [city], stock quotes, and more--check out Google's full list.

Make conversions: Swap units of measure, such as measurements of volume or distance; this works for converting different currencies, too. Try [number and unit] in [new unit] such as 7 inches in cm or 30 Euros in USD.

Bing Bonanza

Find links to files: Find pages that host or lead to certain file types, such as music. Enter [search term] contains:[file type] such as Wilco contains:MP3 to find MP3s from the band Wilco. Try this kind of search with many other file types, such as WMA, PDF, AAC, DOC, and nearly anything else.

Remove the background image: Bing sure is cute, but its big photos can be distracting. Visit http://www.bing.com/?rb=0 for a plain, gray version of the site.

Save searches as RSS feeds: If you want to stay on top of hits to a search query, turn it into an RSS feed. After loading your results, append &format=rss to the end of the new URL, and view it in your favorite RSS reader.

SWOM for everyone

If we're to be really honest with each other, most will admit that success in business comes when we engage and talk to others or others make referrals.(known as "Word of mouth"). This is nothing new - its been central to achieving good business results ever since time began and there's little chance of it ever changing in our lifetime. Yet something IS missing in our modern-day social media interactions. We've 'lost the plot'!

You only have to spend a short time is any social media network to spot the blunder: complete strangers jamming their business opportunities in your face - and you hardly know a thing about them! What ever happened to business etiquette?

Gone are the formal introductions, breaking the ice, establishing common ground and getting to know each other first. No one has time or patience it seems - preferring instead to "shoot from a distance" and hope like hell that they hit the target anyway. It's the biggest blunder anyone could make in social networking - yet it's become the norm. How did this happen? What can be done? Have you noticed?

A Dealers Tips: Selling Sports Cards

When I was between the ages of 13 and 15, I had my own business selling sports cards at flea markets and city fairs. I outsold the big boys. Grown men making $20 selling the same cards if they were lucky while I was making easily $70 a day much of it profit.

Times have changed and so has the market for sports cards, but much of the buying and selling sports cards methods are the same. Remember to invest in quality versus quantity. The old hero's will always hold value over the new phenoms who's cards are printed in excess. Keep your inventory organized and don't sweat small changes in value.

Getting Organized For Selling Sports Cards

Some helpful supplies

If you have a large collection you will be parting with and don't already use these supplies please let me recommend the following.

Beckett Price Guide

There are a few options when pricing your cards. In my own experience the most respected and utilized among dealers is the monthly publication called Beckett. Beckett sports card price guide puts out a different monthly book for each the following sports; baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and racing. Unfortunetly you will need a separate price guide for each of the sports you plan to be selling cards from. If you have only a handful of cards you will be selling you can borrow a copy of a Beckett magazine for most sports from your local public library. If you can not find any Becketts in your area you could subscribe online through a magazine company or enroll at Beckett.com.

Soft Sleeves

Even if you use Top Loads listed below you should keep all your cards in soft sleeve. These sleeves can prevent water marks on your cards and help keep corners from getting bent. Unless the card was valued at below 25 cents I kept all my cards in a sleeve.

Top Loads

I highly recommend buying Top Loads for all the cards you plan to sell. These will keep your cards in very good condition. Your cards already placed in soft sleeves will slide right in. You can mail these in padded envelopes when selling online and be worry free that they will arrive safe.

Storage

As long as there in Top Loads, cards can be stored just about anywhere that you would keep important papers. Obviously don't leave them down in the damp basement. You can purchase boxes specifically for holding cards. It isn't necessary to go out and spend a bunch on boxes though. Any cardboard or plastic storage box kept at room temparture will do fine as long as the cards are stored with care and not just tossed into the container.

Establish What You Have

First of all, establish which cards you are going to be selling. If you're not sure what you have, start by sorting cards in to their production years for example 96-97 season for basketball or 96 seasons for baseball. Then begin sorting by brand. Separate by Fleer, Topps, Upper Deck, etc.

Most cards are numbered both in regular sets and in special addition sets, also known as insert sets added in to the circulation of the card packs. Some may use letters such as

A thru K to give an order to the set. Once you have these organized you can begin searching for the prices.

Labels and Tracking

There are a few ways to keep track of what a card is worth once it's been looked up in the price guide. You could keep track in a paper notebook or in Excel. If you like bookkeeping this may be for you. Listing all cards by year, brand, player, etc. I liked an easier, "fast find" way of pricing. I purchased small label stickers and wrote the price on the sticker then placed it on the outside of the soft sleeve for every card I planned to sell. Then slipped these back into the Top Loads and placed them in my storage container.

The prices can change every month but once you get to know your cards and where they are located in a Beckett, pricing can take only an hour or two for hundreds of cards since there will be many that don't have any changes.

If selling online, remove the sticker from sleeve or place in a new sleeve. If selling at a flea market make sure that it is in a sleeve that has only one price on it.

Pricing flaws

As you start through the different piles you've created by organizing your cards, pay attention to any bends or tears in the cards. If there is serious damage you can pretty much consider it a loss. On very valuable, older cards some tear and bends can be ok and will just reduce the price to whatever someone is willing to pay. On newer, less valuable cards any damage can make the card basically worthless because someone looking for the card will have many options and will most likely looking to build a collection with mint condition cards.

Selling Sports Cards

Selling

Depending on which route you plan to take for selling will determine what price you should expect. The trick to selling sports cards is to always make sure the buyer walks away thinking their getting an awesome deal. You could sell well always charging just below the Beckett price. If you really want to bring in profits try to give a fair discount off the Beckett price. When I sold I often put a 20% to 50% discount depending what I paid or how I acquired them (bulk, discount through another dealer, packs, etc.) If I paid $100 for $500 worth of cards and sold them all for a total of $250, not only did I make a $150 profit but I gained some repeat customers. Pretty good marketing strategy for a 13 year old. (I was selling a LONG time ago.)

Doing the Swap Meet Thing

I did it every weekend the swap meet was open for 2 years. The only exception was when I accompanied my father to city fairs such as Maple Valley Days or Kent Cornucopia Days.

If you have a free weekend and want to try the swap meet my best recommendation would be to go the weekend before and see how others are selling. Take the most appealing thing from each sports card booth and incorporate it into yours. Everyone is selling the same thing. It's the booth decoration that sells the card. The more professional the better. Nothing I could tell you would help more than you seeing for yourself.

Auctioning it off

I highly recommend selling online. If you plan to use EBay or another auction site, do some research to see if your card is selling well or if there are just too many posted to get a price your comfortable with. There may be cases where your card isn't even listed by anyone else. In this case check out other cards you player has and see how well they're selling and what percentage of their Beckett price their getting. Just like when selling at a flea market, see what the competition is doing. What are they adding to their descriptions to get the price they want? Look at the specifics in both their titles and descriptions.

The most important thing to get your item looked at it the title. In the few words the auction site will allow you to use, put as much info as possible. Year, brand and player, should always be included. Avoid words like rare, hot, or any other adjectives. When people are searching for the card they want; the card you have, they will be looking for specifics. Adding adjectives only lessens the detail you could be providing in your title.

Make sure you include card condition and shipping information. A buyer will want to know that they are getting the card they paid for in the condition they expected after reading your description. Consider that some buyers are grandparents looking to get their grandchildren some player cards from their favorite team. Consider this for both the title (only if their room) and definitely for the description. There are many different types of buyers and many different reasons to buy different cards.

Sports cards are cheap to ship individually if the buyer doesn't mind you shipping in a #10 business envelope. An added bonus to the buyer if you chose to pay the $.37 cents. Unfortunately, these can get caught in mail machines on occasion and can be "lost" in transit. Bubble mailers are the best way to go. You may not be as willing to spring for the shipping charge but at least both sides will know card will delivered the way it was sent.

If you are selling cards in bulk I recommend grouping the cards you have to sets and then selling them together. Someone looking to complete or start a set collection (set: all of one brand, same year, beginning to end. Avg: 70 to 200 cards) would find this to be a good find. The cards may be worth only a nickel a piece but selling 40 of them for $3.00 is a lot more than if you tried to break up a bunch of common cards (common: cards without their own price and all have a common price usually .05 to .15 cents).

Play with the bulk selling leaving out any cards that can sell on their own. Consider selling a valuable card and then "including" common cards as an added bonus.

Selling to a dealer

It is possible to sell in bulk to a dealer and make some money but don't expect to pay the mortgage with it... Do not accept what he offers to be the only price you're going to get. I had tons of people come up to me offering cards. I had a good source and really didn't need to take on extra inventory so I offered very low if I didn't turn them down all together. If you have tons of cards, have already gone through the ones worth more than you'd be willing to sell for than just a few dollars, and are ready to just unload, do some homework. Before even presenting those to a dealer add up the total values of the cards. Get an idea of what you want to be paid. If I had a total of $600, counting cards from $1 to $10 I'd expect $120. As far as counting common cards, these are of almost no use to a dealer. Don't bother with these. The only use for common cards is to make sets. Most dealers buy sets complete

I would suggest included the junk with the jewels as part of the package. If he is going to buy the good stuff you want him to take the trash with it. A dealer doesn't want it but he can find a place for it. Do not take less than you are comfortable with. With that in mind do not expect more than 30% of what Beckett say's their worth. You would be lucky to get more. Consider that a high number when selling to a dealer. Most dealers also know to sell for less than their worth to the consumer so they have to buy for way less. Avoid trying dealers if you have less than 20 cards. Use this route if you want to move a lot of cards all at once. If you only have a few try the EBay route.

Should You Keep Them

Something to consider is keeping any cards that family may like. Cards worth anything such as $10 or more, that isn't a new card may become more valuable over the years. If you found your deceased grandpa's old vintage cards and you aren't in money trouble consider passing them down further to another family member that would enjoy them for the fact that they are a part of the family. If they belonged to your college son and he doesn't want them anymore pick through what he may want when he's older (favorite teams, players, etc.) and have a blast selling the rest. Younger siblings or other children in the family or of friends may also enjoy starting a collection of their own. How much more fun would it be to give 200 cards that aren't worth more than a few pennies to a 7 year old boy who will enjoy them for what they are, then get a few bucks selling them and dealing with the hassles of shipping.

As the popularity of pop us waned, Floating ads started to appear, animations or text that slide onto the screen and hover over the centre to grab your attention, these are very irritating ads but the usually have a button to click to close the add quickly.

Flash adverts are increasingly being used on online games sites, the show ads whilst your game is loading, these are impossible to block without removing flash, which would make your game impossible to play.

Search engines are responsible for the latest form of online advertising, not only have they started advertising along side search results but the adverts themselves are based on the search so if you type in money in the search box you can be sure the ads on the results page will be money related.

Love it or Hate it

Love it or hate it advertising on the internet is here to stay, without advertising most websites would be unable to survive without charging you for access, you can block annoying ads like pop ups, but unless you have limited bandwidth there is no reason to block harmless banner and text ads.

The ads on a website keep it free for you to use and they provide an income to the web master which keeps the site up and running. After all without advertising would hubpages survive?

Twitter's International Growth Continues

While Twitter's growth has slowed down in recent months, new data shows that the popular microblogging service has found a lot of new users outside of the United States. According to new data from social media analytics and monitoring firm Sysomos, the U.S. now accounts for about 50% of all active Twitter users. This is down sharply from 62% in June 2009. The share of Twitter users from Brazil, Indonesia and Germany, however, has grown significantly over the last six months.

Brazil, Indonesia and Germany

Brazil now accounts for 8.8% of all Twitter users - up from just 2% in June. Indonesia's Twitter users now account for 2.5% of all users (up from 0.5%). The percentage of German users among all Twitter users is now 2.5%, up from 1.5% in the middle of last year.

Users from Brazil now represent Twitter's second most active population, followed by the U.K. (7.2%), Canada (4.35%) and Germany (2.49%).

Interestingly, the U.K. still leads Brazil when it comes to the number of total tweets contributed. Here the U.S. leads with 56.59% (down from 50.9% last year), followed by the U.K. (8.09%). Twitter's Brazilian population contributed 6.73% of all tweets.

Twitter's most active users can be found in New York City, London and Los Angeles. Twitter's hometown of San Francisco is home to the company's 10th most active group of users.

These numbers clearly indicate that Twitter saw significant growth outside the U.S. over the last six months.

Nobody is Using Geotagging

Sysomos got this this data by analyzing the profiles of over 13 million unique Twitter users who were active between Oct. 16, 2009 and Dec. 16, 2009.

Given the recent interest in geotagging and geolocation services, we also asked Sysomos to look at the percentage of tweets that are currently being tagged trough Twitter's Geotagging API. While we didn't expect that large numbers of users were currently attaching location data to their tweets, we were surprised by how low this number currently is. Sysomos scanned 10 million tweets from Monday and Tuesday this week. Only 0.23% of these had been tagged using the Geotagging API.

Given that the API has only been available for a few month and that only a small number of Twitter clients currently supports this service, it doesn't come us a surprise that only a few users are currently using this service. This small number, however, also indicates that users aren't clamoring to tag their location to their tweets.

Google & Yahoo! Bow to Facebook & Twitter

Yahoo! announced that it is adding Facebook Connect across many of its properties. Then, Google Friend Connect announced the inclusion of Twitter as a top-level log-in option. These moves will be convenient for users, but may not be good for the future of the web.

People have always said that Google does what's good for the web, because what's good for the web is good for Google. In this case I'm worried that the Royalty of the web's last generation has crowned these two leading social networks as the Royalty of the current generation in a deal that offers traffic and money but that could suffocate the most creative developments of the open, distributed web. That could be called the web's next generation.

The Importance of Identity

Identity is a very important matter online, particularly as everything becomes more social. Online identity is your address book, it's your wallet, it's your reputation and it could become a lot more. Increasingly, you take that Identity from site to site, leveraging on the next site what you did on the last one. If a particular company provides that Identity for you, it sets the rules, regulations, "interest rates" (eg. use of your info for advertising) and determines things like what parts of your identity you can use on different sites and what parts you can't.

Facebook and Twitter are becoming big Identity providers. Google and Yahoo! have wanted to be leading Identity providers themselves but today cried Uncle with a big nod to the supremacy of the two leading social networks. At this point they have an interest in doing so, because they want you to share what you do on Yahoo and Google sites with your big link-clicking network of friends on Facebook and Twitter. Google didn't add Facebook Connect, just Twitter, because Facebook is now Google's leading challenger.

The Rest of the Identity World

But there are far more parties in the world of Identity than Twitter and Facebook. The Internet works because it is decentralized and there are scores of small companies, services and developers building out Identity infrastructures that are decentralized as well. Infrastructures that leverage the network-effect of the decentralized internet to provide the benefits of a large group, but are independent and interoperable in order to provide the benefits of personal freedom and control that can come from owning your own Identity.

Those small players, people working on things like OpenID, ActivityStreams, the distributed social graph and other components of distributed, independent and interoperable social networking - those players may have been sold down the river by today's deals between Yahoo and Google and Facebook and Twitter.

How could that be? After all, the OpenID logo appears on the login screen for Google Friend Connect and Yahoo! has been a big supporter of OpenID. I would argue that by putting the best known brands, with the easiest log-in experiences, at the very front of the parade - Google and Yahoo have further marginalized the distributed web. The PR email to journalists about the announcement was even titled "Google Friend Connect and Twitter Get Cozy Together."

The Consequences of Today's Deals

By choosing to favor branded log-ins and making standards-based systems an afterthought, websites using these systems are disincentivized to leverage the innovations that come from the open standards community and big Identity brands stay in control. Those websites might be Google and Yahoo! or they might be other big sites with all the more reason to favor incumbent leaders in Identity because of the support Google and Yahoo! have given them.

People have talked about combining OpenID and Friend of a Friend data for spam control on blogs. "We'll just require Facebook log-in, thanks," I can imagine big websites saying. People are working on implementing cross-network standards for user activity data so sites can understand the activity feeds of other social networks and users of small, innovative sites can still communicate with their friends on other, larger sites. That means people will use small innovative sites and give them the support to grow. "Most people just use Facebook or Twitter," I can imagine big websites saying. People have talked about using things like content category tags and bookmarks to build cross-site userbookmarks to build cross-site user Attention Profiles. "We'll just look at their Facebook profiles," I can imagine big websites saying.

A distributed social web, communicating through interoperable, standards-based language, offers as much opportunity for innovation as a common tongue does for poetry, universally visible pigments do for art or cash money and free time do for a self-determined afternoon. Your clicks, your contacts, your measurable behavior and content online are like fuel to burn, cash to spend. You'll either be able to spend that resource on things like recommendations, privileges, trust, recognition, greater efficiency and unforeseeable innovation - or those resources will be handed directly and exclusively to advertisers for the benefit of those who broker your Identity.

The identity and activity payloads that come with most systems of identity don't seem to be of much interest to sites leveraging Facebook and Twitter as primary identity providers today, though. It's hard to think about anything else when all that potential traffic from enabling broadcast of your content is dangling in front of you.

"All you little sites are interested in making it easy to do cross-site photo identification/ comment re-aggregation / book recommendation based on charecteristics of multiple social networking profiles (etc.)?" Big Website might say, "Well, Facebook and Twitter don't do that and they are good enough for us. We're excited about people broadcasting links to our site out to their Twitter and Facebook friends. That's enough for us. Isn't that innovative?"

This may be more cynicism than is warranted, but I don't think so. When dealing with hundreds of millions of peoples' identities, the future of human communication and trillions of dollars - it's probably good to lean a little toward cynicism when considering collaboration with incumbent industry leaders.

I appreciate the ease of Facebook and Twitter login around the web as much as anyone, but every big Identity login action I take feels like an economic transaction where the change and the interest slip through my fingers and land in the pockets of Facebook and Twitter.

Wouldn't it have been better for the web to say "no, we will not simply take the easy solutions when it comes to Identity, in exchange for traffic and money. We will instead look for ways to make it easier for users of any Identity provider to engage with our websites."

The short-term trade of giving more control to two big social networks, in exchange for traffic and ad money, may not serve anyone well in the long run.

Is YouTube the Next Google?

During the Web 2.0 Summit recently, the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, pointed out that one of the reasons the world is no longer the same is YouTube. For better or worse, said Mr. Newsom, we are now always on the record. Every significant and insignificant conversation is being recorded, and the videos are available on YouTube.

His co-panelist Joe Trippi, who was in charge of Howard Dean's presidential campaign, further explained that because of YouTube, we have now entered the age of transparency. Joe argued that because we are always on record, the only sensible thing to do is to tell the truth. The panelists agreed that YouTube, and the online video movement, is fundamentally changing our society.

The panel was indeed thought provoking, but there was another conversation at the Summit that got me thinking that the second largest search engine may be on its way to becoming the largest.

The story of one 9-year-old boy

During one of the conference breaks, I met Ian Kennedy, one of the heads of Service Innovation at Nokia. (You've seen a lot of Ian around the web because he used to be the product manager for MyBlogLog at Yahoo!.) Ian and I started talking, and he mentioned that his son accesses the web through YouTube. At first, I didn't get it and thought Ian was making a joke.

But then I realized he was not. Whenever his son needed any information, he would open up YouTube, type in the search term and then just watch the videos that showed up as matches. He never Googled anything; he never went to any other site; his entire web experience was confined to YouTube videos. It was rather puzzling, I thought. Could it be that there are YouTube videos on any topic? My curiosity was piqued, and I decided to run a little experiment.

The YouTube experiment

To get an idea, I ran several different searches:

•Chicken Noodle Soup (bad results)

•George Washington (bad results)

•Astrophysics (bad results)

•Donkey from Shrek (good results)

•Lance Wataru (good results)

•vacuuming carpet (good results)

•Gavin Newsom (good results)

•Bakugan (good results)

Like any search engine, YouTube is not perfect. In general, short queries on generic topics, like Astrophysics, do not work very well. Somewhat surprisingly, George Washington and Chicken Noodle Soup do not yield good results either. But some searches do work very well. Ian said that his son frequently searches for episodes of Bakugan, which come up perfectly. Another likely search for a 9-year-old, Lance Wataru (a Pokemon character), works well, too. More specific searches, such as Donkey from Shrek, work even better.

Anything that can be a video will be a video

I walked away with the impression that we are not quite there yet, but was intrigued. Clearly a lot of things lend themselves to video, not just movies and music clips, but educational videos, tourism and a lot of other things. If video content continues to grow, could video eventually replace text?

Most likely not. The main reason that text rules the web today is because of hyperlinks. Linking pages via text links is what makes the web possible. Hyperlinking videos would be a harder thing to do. Not impossible, of course, because you can link objects and insert text in videos, but it's just not as elegant as text. Besides the linking issue, not everything would be an effective video. For example, a research paper could be made into a video but would not be as easy to follow as the text.

But there is definitely a shift. Because video was not possible before, the web was dominated by text. Now that video cameras and broadband are cheap, information that is better served by video is getting converted. As a result, YouTube is now the second largest search engine, and traffic is through the roof. And because kids like Ian's son are video natives, this is just the beginning.

Generation YouTube

Imagine a whole generation of kids growing up and learning about the world through YouTube. In the first half of the 20th century, people grew up reading books and newspapers. Then there was a generation that grew up on movies and television. The last shift was to the Internet. And now web video is creating yet another generation.

Kids no longer learn about the world by reading text. Like the television generation, they are absorbing the world through their visual sense. But there is a big difference. Television was programmed and inflexible. YouTube is completely micro-chunked and on demand. Kids can search for what they need anytime. This is different, and powerful.

True, the current model of YouTube is still raw and still skewed to entertainment. But imagine online video 5 years from now, geared to kids, where entertainment, games, education, travel -- everything for kids -- is mixed and delivered via searchable channels. This would be a big change on the Internet and in the world. Just as we no longer think twice about Googling, kids of the future will be consuming huge volumes of information via video.

Why is Google Afraid of Facebook? Because Social Networking Could Soon Pass Search
It's often said these days that Google and Facebook are major rivals, but how could that be if one is in search and the other, social networking? Traffic analyst firm Hitwise provided one very clear clue tonight when it published new numbers for web user activity in Australia. For perhaps the first time ever, social networking sites have surpassed the traffic search engines receive, Hitwise says. There is reason to question the company's categorization of web traffic, but the trend is worth examining none the less.

Social networking climbed fast this year, and Hitwise says it just peaked over search for a few days during the communication frenzy of Christmas.

The biggest problem with Hitwise's numbers is that the company appears to include YouTube in the "social networks and forums" category that is challenging search. That's a questionable categorization of (Google's) YouTube, a site that some people call the 2nd-largest search engine on the web. A person certainly can use YouTube as a social network - but we'd guess that far more people use it as a search engine. If YouTube is growing (and this analysis says it is) then search is growing. You wouldn't think search would have much room to grow, but YouTube demonstrates nicely that there can emerge new kinds of search at any time. Some people argue that real-time search is the next type that will emerge as a growth industry for the search market. Others point to social search and that kind of amalgamation could throw our search vs. social networking equation entirely!

The arguable mischaracterization of YouTube seems to throw a big monkey-wrench in Hitwise's usually fabulous market analysis, but as a general trend social network is undoubtedly growing. At 2% of web use, according again to Hitwise, YouTube is a major player - but lets think about the rise of actual social networking sites relative to search.

What would it mean if social networking over-took search in terms of sheer visits online? It would mark a sea-change on the internet. No longer would our dominant use of the web be seeking out web-pages built by HTML web-masters! Now we would all be publishing tiny little updates that perhaps only our friends and family care about. We'd be subscribing, more than we ever did by RSS, to syndicated updates from organizations of interest, large and small. It would be (perhaps will be) a very different era and, to be frank, it's going to be harder to monetize. There will be privacy battles. There will be new platforms for innovation.

It's a pretty big deal. Things will really change if current trends continue and social networking rises to the top. That's not as clear as this traffic analyst firm argues that it is, but it could happen. And that's a big reason why Google and Facebook are rivals.

How Much Are We Worth?

Before applying for any job, the main question that would arise would be 'How much would they pay me?'. After successfully being accepted, we would concentrate all our effort to produce whatever we are assigned to.

Have we really put our thoughts and access how much are we worth? I mean what are our hourly wages are? Joe Dominquez in his book, Your Money or Your Life: Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence wrote about how we should figure our real hourly wages are:

Time - Alright, so this seems like a generic way to kick things off, but stay with me. For each of the other categories on this list we immediately asked ourselves, “What’s the extra time associated with this?” While this isn’t a monetary cost itself, putting Time at the top of our list was a reminder to remember to always take this into consideration.

Taxes - Taxes come next on our list because they’re easy to remember. It’s common for people to think of “take-home pay” or “how much after tax” when thinking about income. If you’re an employee in the U.S., this usually means federal, state, and local (in some places) income taxes, as well as social security and medicare. These numbers are easy to find on paystubs.

Foundation expenses - This was what Courtney and I called anything that wasn’t complete tangible (as in the later categories), but that was required for our work. Courtney had her teaching license fees, union dues, and education conferences. I had my share of real-estate certifications, union dues, broker fees, and sales training. We also included childcare expenses, and more recent visa fees in this category.

Commuting/Transportation - This was the next most tangible category for us to consider. The key is to estimate what percentage of vehicle use is for commuting purposes. You can then apply this to gas, oil, maintenance, insurance, parking, and tolls. Your Money or Your Life also suggests counting traffic tickets, vehicle depreciation, and lease/interest payments. Even if you don’t drive, you’ll likely have some public or alternative transportation costs in here.

Tangible work materials - These were usually physical items that we had to buy and maintain. Out of college, I worked in a factory where I had to purchase ear-plugs and safety glasses (although I was given hardhat). Some people have to provide their own tools, office supplies, or teaching materials. This also includes our fancy cell phones that we justify as “for work,” briefcases, laptops, and other gear/gadgets.

Clothing - We broke this into two sub-categories. First, there are jobs that require uniforms, special shoes, and/or a certain type of specific non-uniform dress (like the Italian restaurant I where I waited tables). On the other hand are the jobs where we buy professional clothes out of a desire to meet a social standard. Think suits and ties, fancy blouses, and trips to the dry cleaners. If you wouldn’t regularly wear it on your days off, it should be included.

Grooming - We used this to include products like make-up, fancy cologne, special haircuts, and jewelry/accessories. Again, it’s important to only include that which you don’t use or wear regularly outside work.

Food/Drink - This is self-explanatory, but contains eating out, snacks throughout the day, and even food purchased after work hours if it’s because you “had too hard of a day at work” to cook dinner. I noticed a lot of my increase in food costs was from eating out for “business” meetings and every Friday when the whole office would go out together. Work-related coffee habits can wrack up some damage fast, too (trust me I know).

Stress - As we began the list, we end it with a general category. The authors of Your Money or Your Life spend a lot of time covering the idea that any time/money that is invested as part of a release, escape, or an unwinding from work should be counted against your income. Some people release through video games or television, while others end up splurging on larger items like spontaneous vacations or larger toys to get away from work. The book even suggests counting increased sick time as a result of stress-related illness!

Look, I know this is a lot to think about. But this exercise isn’t meant to discourage. Just the opposite! Remember, there are usually other benefits to your income, as well. This post only features one side of the coin.

However, figuring your real hourly wage is an awesome tool when trying to compare two income opportunities that aren’t similar to begin with. It may help encourage you to start a part-time business or may simply remind you of just how beneficial your current employment really is.

If you haven’t run your own numbers, I’d strongly recommend it. It worked wonders for me!

Here is what you get when you are always thinking about money.

1. Stop avoiding the problem and start being honest. Open the envelopes, call—or even better—visit your bank or broker. Be realistic. So many of us are living in the illusion of total scarcity. Look at what really did happen during the last few months. Get some help. You aren’t supposed to be an expert. Most of us feel intimidated when it comes to money, but the truth is we were never given a proper education about it. You’re not alone. Everyone feels the same way to some degree. But avoiding the subject of money would be like saying, learning to walk is too difficult, so I’m not going to do it. Learn the basics. You’ll feel more grounded. And make sure to hire a banker or accountant you feel good about.

2. Get organized. Know where your accounts, credit-card statements, insurance documents, will, etc. are. Most of us feel overwhelmed because we just don’t know where all of this stands. Often, it’s not the lack of money but more the general level of uncertainty and messiness around this topic.

3. Review your statements. Get a feel for what you are spending. Where is your money really going? You may often find some errors and double charges. Look at hidden fees from all the bills you pay. Confirm that some of your regular income is going to a savings account on a monthly basis. If you have an investment account, take a close look at what you have: stocks, funds, bonds, cash, gold. Know what you have and then ask yourself how it feels. You don’t need to have a finance background to know whether your money situation is letting you sleep at night.

4. Get back to basics. This applies to every area of your life. Do you need to be spending so much on margaritas? Do you need another pair of jeans or shoes? Do you need a gym membership in a hot club you never use? Everyone knows where they are "leaking" money. For some it's on clothes, others it's food, and others it's on personal beauty treatments. Ask yourself what changes you can make that only you would notice.

5. Find another source of income, in addition to your regular job. Can you find a way of creating something, consulting, writing, translating, editing, babysitting, taking care of an elderly person, promoting something, or organizing something? The possibilities are endless. Here’s a clue—look for a way to take away someone’s pain, or problem. That’s what people will pay money for. What are you really good at? What is easy for you? Stretch your identity of what else you might be able to do, other than your regular job. And if you are the creative type, which deep down we all are, think about writing an ebook on a subject you know a lot about. There are plenty of sites that will put it up for free. You can then be making money while you sleep. That’s the goal.

6. Ask for discounts and special offers on everything. Think about how you can save on cable, phone bills, clothes, restaurants, or any work-related deals. Negotiate from the heart. Come from a place of authenticity and ask sincerely. You will be amazed at what you can receive.

7. Look around for things you own that you can sell. Your junk is worth something to someone else. You have thousands of dollars hidden in things you don’t really want or use anymore. Yes, this takes a bit of time but the payoff in terms of money, less clutter and freeing up space for something new to come into your life is well worth it.

8. Not that this is a must, but if you had to radically downsize your life, how would you do this? Would you move? Would you cook more or grow your own food? What would you do? Just knowing this will push you to live differently, with a higher level of consciousness

9. Take a look at your beliefs and emotions around money. Most of us picked these up from our parents. One of them was probably fearful or always worried. Maybe one of them over-spent or was in debt. Think about it. You are now an adult and don’t have to be loyal to their beliefs around money. If you do feel anxious about money, take a deep breath and ask yourself: “Where have I seen this before?” Commit to making a fresh start.

10. Be grateful for what you do have. We have so much more than 95% of the planet. Bless what you have. Find ways of giving. If it's not money, give your time and your heart. The more you give, the more life finds ways to give back.

5 Important Things to Look For When Buying Used-Car

If only cars could talk. It would make the buying experience a lot easier, wouldn't it? Either verbalized or not, every used car has a story to tell. In order to avoid getting ripped off, it's up to you to listen. You need to know about the skeletons in that car's closet, the dark secrets of its past.

There are so many problems that can hide easily under the surface -- accident damage, a counterfeit title, failing mechanical parts. It's not as if you're marrying the car, but you are making quite a financial commitment. Wouldn't you rather find out about these red flags before saying "I do" and plunking down your hard-earned cash?

With this list of warning signs, you'll be able to make your next used car purchase confidently -- and if you do find "the one," we'll bet the relationship won't end in a messy divorce.

No 1. No Service Records

One of the most important aspects of a used car is its maintenance history. You want to make sure you're buying a vehicle that has had routine oil changes and major mileage services. Always ask the seller, even if it's a car dealership, for all service records. If they can't provide those for you, you have no way of knowing if the car has been maintained properly. In addition to asking for records, look for a windshield sticker indicating when the car's next oil change is due. If there's no sticker or it shows an oil change is past due, ask why.

No 2. Vehicle and Accident History Issues

A vehicle history report is essential for any car purchase. You can ask the seller or dealership for the report or access it yourself online using the car's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). AutoCheck, for instance, charges $19.99 for a single report or $29.99 for unlimited reports for 60 days. The report shows accident/damage history as well as title problems, frame damage and an odometer rollback check -- any of which should be deal breakers.

No 3. Mechanical Problems
A quick look under the car can reveal fluid leaks, but unless you're an expert, you'll need to have someone else do a thorough inspection to make sure it's in good working condition. A PPI, or Pre-Purchase Inspection, is performed by a neutral third party (such as a certified mechanic or automotive technician) and costs about $100 to $200.

The inspection is a detailed assessment of the cosmetic and mechanical condition of the vehicle. It is an invaluable asset since it can alert you to problems, maintenance issues and even frame damage hiding under the surface. The mechanic should put the car on a lift to check undercarriage components. Make sure he or she also uses a paint meter gauge to catch any re-painted body panels -- which mean the car may have been in accidents that weren't reported to the insurance company (if they had been reported, they would show up on your AutoCheck vehicle history report). Choose the party who will perform the inspection, rather than going with someone recommended by the seller. Ask to have the results sent directly to you.

You may be tempted to skip a PPI, but it's almost always well worth it. You're making a large investment in a vehicle, and the price of the PPI is only a very small fraction of that. If any problems the PPI shows are deal breakers, you can walk away from the sale. If not, you can still use them to negotiate a better price.

No. 4 A Problem Title
Your AutoCheck vehicle report will show any problem titles on the car's record at any point in its history -- everything from hail damage to fire damage. Most of these issues are red flags, but here's just a sampling of those to avoid at all costs: Flood titles, which means the vehicle has received extensive water damage; salvage titles, which mean an insurance company has at some point declared the car a total loss due to sustained damage; and junk titles, which mean the vehicle indicate that a vehicle is not safe enough for use and the car cannot be titled again in that state.

No. 5 A Fraudulent Title
A problem-free title doesn't mean it's valid. Criminals can create counterfeit or fraudulent titles and use them to legally register and then sell stolen cars. If you buy a car without a valid title, it's the worst-case scenario -- you don't legally own the car you just bought.

The first step to verify the title is to check with the Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV). Usually, you'll just need the car's VIN number and may be charged a small fee (often these transactions require you to go to the DMV's office). You need to make sure the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the title and the seller's name matches the one on the title. This record check is also valuable because it will show any outstanding liens on the title, which means that the owner is still making payments on the car and doesn't own it outright. This could complicate the sale later, especially if you're buying from a private seller.

However, even if the title appears to belong to the seller, it could still be fraudulent. There are a few signs that may signify foul play. Play close attention if the vehicle was recently brought to your state and titled or if the VIN number on the car is obscured or shows signs of tampering. The title should look official, meaning it will be printed on special paper with watermarks (visible when held up to the light). All text, graphics and borders should be sharp, not blurred. If you can, compare the title with an original (perhaps from a friend's car in the same state) and make sure the two look the same.

Remember

Checking for all these red flags may seem excessive, but they can save you time and headaches down the line. In the end, the PPI, AutoCheck vehicle history report, DMV records and seller should be consistent. If any of the information seems fishy, consider walking away from the sale. If any of the above warning signs do surface, you may not even want to give the car a second thought. It doesn't hurt to walk away, but it can sure hurt a lot to buy a problem vehicle. Plus, with the internet, you can find virtually any car, anywhere. And as they say, there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

New research by Citibank reveals that social media has yet to penetrate the small business world, finding that 76% of the 500 organizations surveyed have not found social media useful in generating business. So you want to ditch your corporate cubicle and join the ranks of web workers? But you have a mortgage, maybe a dependent or two, and a taste for Venti Mochas from Starbucks? You can make money in the new economy, though it might not be as easy or cushy as keeping your old economy job.

I’m not talking about advertising or affiliate marketing or selling your junk on eBay. Those are so last millennium! I’m talking about the new new economy.

1. Offer your professional expertise in an online marketplace.These days, you can do more than just sell your old books via Amazon and your old Coach handbags via eBay—now you can sell your professional capabilities in a marketplace. No longer are you limited to looking for a permanent or contract job on Web 1.0 style job sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. The new breed of freelancing and project-oriented sites let companies needing help describe their projects. Then freelancers and small businesses offer bids or ideas or proposals from which those buyers can choose.

Elance covers everything from programming and writing to consulting and design, while RentACoder focuses on software, natch. If you’re a graphic designer, check out options like Design Outpost or LogoWorks–you don’t have to find the customers, they’ll come to you. Wannabe industry analysts might sign up for TechDirt’s Insight Community, a marketplace for ideas about technology marketing.

2. Sell photos on stock photography sites. If people regularly oooo and aaaaah over your Flickr pics, maybe you’re destined for photographic greatness or maybe just for a few extra dollars. It’s easier than ever to get your photos out in front of the public, which of course means a tremendous amount of competition, but also means it might be an convenient way for you to build up a secondary income stream. 3. Blog for pay. Despite the explosion of blogs, it’s hard to find good writers who can turn around a solidly-written post on an interesting topic quickly. Write blog posts that are polished and not overly personal (although showing some personality is a plus).

4. Or start your own blog network. If you like the business side of things–selling advertising, hiring and managing employees, attracting investors–and have the stomach to go up against the likes of Weblogs, Inc., GigaOmniMedia, b5media, maybe you should make an entire business out of blogs. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll get a lot of time to write yourself though.

5. Provide service and support for open source software. Just because the software is free doesn’t mean you can’t make money on it–just ask Red Hat, a well-known distributor of Linux that sports a market cap of more than four billion dollars. As a solo web worker, you might not want to jump in and compete with big companies offering Linux support, but how about offering support for web content management systems like WordPress or Drupal? After getting comfortable with your own installation, you can pretty easily jump into helping other people set them up and configure them.

6. Online life coaching. Who has time to go meet a personal coach at an office? And don’t the new generation of web workers need to be met by their coaches in the same way that they work: via email, IM, and VoIP? You could, of course, go through some life coaching certification program, but on the web, reputation is more important than credentials. I bet Tony Robbins isn’t certified as a life coach–and no one can argue with his success. 7. Virtually assist other web workers. And you do it all from your own home office, interacting with your clients online and by phone. You can make $20 and up an hour doing this sort of work, depending on your expertise.

Did you know that you can’t even count on your virtual hard drive on EC2 to store your data permanently? That’s why people are making money right now by offering services on top of AWS. 9. Write reviews for pay or perks. If you blog for any length of time on a particular topic–parenting, mobile phones, or PCs, for example–you will likely be approached to do book or product reviews. These are decisions you’ll have to make for yourself, because no one agrees upon what ethical rules apply to bloggers. Even less do people agree on services like PayPerPost that pay you to write reviews on your blog. You probably have heard stories about businesses that will pay you just to drive around with an advertisement on your car, but do these opportunities really exist? And, if so, how do you find them?
They're called "free car" programs or "get paid to drive" promotions. These programs do exist, although they aren't as plentiful as they once were. The key is knowing where to look and having what it takes to make you an ideal advertising driver.

How it works
Here's the basic premise of the "paid to drive" concept: A company seeks people -- regular citizens, not professional drivers -- to go about their normal routine as they usually do, only with a big ad plastered on their car. The ads are typically vinyl decals, also known as "auto wraps," that almost seem to be painted on the vehicle, and which often cover a large portion of the car's exterior surface.
The car owner is then compensated, usually a few hundred dollars per month, which is essentially a "rental" payment for letting the company use that space. In the past, there's also been a "free car" version of this concept. The company provided the driver with a new, prewrapped car. In this situation, the drivers usually didn't get any cash; their payment amounted to the free use of a new car. However, companies quickly discovered that giving away a bunch of free cars didn't make economic sense, so few still take this approach, says Drew Livingston, president of Free Car Media in Los Angeles.
What does the company get out of this type of ad strategy? Lots of exposure. The auto wraps tend to be colorful and eye-catching and attract lots of attention. Plus, it's a form of advertising with a captive audience, meaning people who are stuck in traffic and can't avoid seeing the wrapped car alongside them, Livingston says.
The companies usually select drivers who live in desirable locations such as high-traffic, urban areas. A company's ideal driver can vary depending upon the target demographic they want to reach, according to Brandon Clarke of DrivenMedia, a Phoenix-based advertising company that specializes in creating branded vehicle campaigns for clients. For example, a tech or electronics company may seek drivers who live on or near college campuses, so as to gain exposure with the college crowd.

The vehicles in these programs are often equipped with GPS tracking devices, so the companies can make sure the drivers spend sufficient time in the desired areas.
'Paid to drive' primetime
Paid-to-drive programs were very popular five to 10 years ago. Gas was cheaper, and people were spending more time on the road. There were plenty of Web sites devoted to these programs, including many fee-charging sites that acted as a middleman and promised to connect willing drivers with companies seeking vehicles for their ads.
Then, fuel prices spiked and people weren't spending as much time in their cars, Clarke says. At the same time, online advertising became the rage.
Current opportunities
Still, there are opportunities out there, if you know where to look.
Livingston says his company's client companies still have plenty of campaigns running nationwide. Business slowed slightly right before the recession but returned when the economy started going south.
"Consumers are seeking ways to make money, while companies are cutting back on spending for television campaigns and looking for more affordable advertising strategies," Livingston says.
On average, Livingston's clients put about 800 to 1,000 wrapped cars on the road.
Like other similar companies, Free Car Media serves as a matchmaker. Interested consumers register at MyFreeCar.com and then are notified when they meet the criteria a client seeks in potential drivers.
Drivers are paid an average of $700 to $900 per month, with campaigns usually running a few months long. Drivers use their own cars which are fitted with the wrap. "They don't actually get a free car," Livingston says. "But the monthly payment is generally enough to cover their auto expenses like car payment, gas, etc., for the month, so that's where the name comes from."
It doesn't cost anything for drivers to sign up, and Livingston warns people to avoid any sites that do charge a fee.
"There are a lot of unscrupulous companies that want to charge you $20, $30 or more when you can get this information yourself for free. I get calls on a weekly basis from people who are upset because they were scammed," he says. Livingston says that anyone who is directed to his site after paying a fee to another service should demand a refund.
Adding to the confusion, many of the sites -- legitimate and questionable -- have very similar names, often some variation of the words "free" and "car." So it's important to check out the Web site carefully, watching for any mention of fees or membership costs.
Finding drivers
Clarke says his company puts a lot of effort into recruiting brand influencers, or drivers who are a perfect fit for the client's target audience.
"Recent engagements have focused on family-oriented and consumer driven advertisers who are generally trying to create awareness within a specific region among active moms with active families," Clarke says, adding that busy soccer moms would make perfect driver candidates for these campaigns. "With active families being such a coveted demographic, incorporating their vehicles is ideal since they're getting tremendous exposure parked in the pick-up line at school, at the Saturday morning soccer games, etc."
There are important criteria for driving candidates. It happens, and when it does, you lose all of your bookmarks, backlinks, and traffic from that source. It's painful, but about all you can do is to diversify a bit, don't put all of your social marketing eggs in one basket.

Again, having too many is deterimental time wise, but having only one could also be disastrous. Knowing where your friends and followers hang out when they aren't on your favorite social site is a good idea. Engaging with them elsewhere can also help you survive when a closure occurs. Be sure they know you, know where you are online, and can recognize you there as well.

Social media is a great promotion method and it can be a great deal of fun in a world where working on your own is the norm. As long as you start out knowing about a few of the etiquette rules and the potential perils, you should find it to be very effective.

How to Generate Good Backlinks and Lots of Them

There are plenty of ways to generate backlinks that point to your website. Backlinks help your standings on search engines, they bring visitors to your site, and they lead to the generation of sales and revenue. There are also alot of ways to get and maintain backlinks.

But there are ways of getting backlinks that are easy, cost you zero dollars, and are on topic with your website.

I obtain a vast majority of my links through blogging. It's fast, fun, easy, costs me absolutely nothing, and I can target exactly what kind of links I am looking for. Most of the links I get range from Page Rank 1-5. You can really get as many links as you want, as there is no limit to this procedure.

What I do, and How I do it!

Intro: First of all let me start by telling you what I use. I use Firefox, with a plugin called "Seo for Firefox". This enables me to see page rank, alexa rating, and a ton of helpful SEO information right off the search engine. But most importantly it allows me to Export the top 100 searches from Google in order of Page Rank. I also use Microsoft Excel to read the exported file from FireFox.

Information: Blogging! There are roughly two types of blogs, and only one of them are useful to us. "NoFollow" and "DoFollow" are the two types.

In a NutShell: NoFollow blogs use a command called "nofollow". What this does is basically tell the search engines to skip your links and not follow them. So any links you have on a "NoFollow" blog simply are not being counted or followed by search engines. As a matter of fact they are being ignored all together! "DoFollow" blogs are what we are after since they do allow search engines to follow, and list your hyperlinks! This would be the same as going to any website that is on topic, and has a good page rank, and posting your URL right on the site's front page!

Basic Rules for Blogging!

1. Make sure you stay on topic with the blog. If you don't chances are your post will get deleted. 2. Make sure not to list your URL inside your blog. There is a separate section to put your URL in. 3. Be polite, informative, and do try to provide some usefull information.

If you do not follow these rules, your blog along with your URL will be removed and all of your work and time wasted!

How Do I Do This?

1. Go to Google, and type in "blog comments powered by Disqus"

2. It is very important to type it exact, and to include the quotation marks.

3. You will notice there are roughly over 20 million pages that show up on the results.

Disqus uses the "DoFollow" command Now to reduce that number, and focus on your targeted niche!

4. If your website is about travel you can simplify the search by typing in: (travel "blog comments powered by Disqus") without the ( ) on the sides.

5. This brings your targeted blogs down to about 738,000.

-But How Do I Get The Backlinks? We are getting there ;)

SAMPLE: Click on the first result from the google search. You can now write your comment, along with your name, and URL pointing to your website. Just make sure you include the full URL to your website in the "website" field. Submit your blog, and you have successfully posted your first blog including a link pointing to your website!

Question: That cannot be it! There has to be more involved in it! Answer: Of course there is, finish the article and bookmark it for future reference!

-Take a look at that first result from google "hxxp://drumsnwhistles.com/2009/03/11/morning-dew/"

6. Shorten it to (site:hxxp//drumsnwhistles.com/2009) and put it into the Google search box minus the ( )

-This will give you a list of 81 related blogs for you to post on, inturn generating you plenty of links! All you have to do is post!

This is where "SEO for FireFox" comes in handy. Make sure you extend the search to the top 100, instead of the top 10. There is an option in the plugin to automatically show the Page Rank of a website. Make sure you set this to "every 1 second". So when you search (site:hxxp://drumsnwhistles.com/2009) it will automatically show page rank. Then you simply export the search results into a CSV file and open it through Microsoft Excel. Once you open it, you can sort it from highest to lowest Page rank. This is all done through the options menu for the Plugin in FireFox!

This only showed you 81 "DoFollow" Blogs to post on. But that was simply using only the first result in the search engine for your given keyword of travel (travel "blog comments powered by Disqus"). You can see how if you went on to the second, third, fourth result etc. you have the potential to get hundreds or thousands of links. And that is just off of the keyword "travel". You do have to put time into it, but it is well worth it in the end.

We all need to become millionaires

WE need to become millionaires when we retire! A lot of people have misconceptions about being millionaires. To them, being a millionaire means they should own total assets – by adding up their total cash, house, Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contribution and car – that are worth RM1mil and above.

They believe that once they achieve one million cash, they should enjoy themselves by driving big luxury cars and staying in bungalows.

In reality, all of us need to become millionaires when we retire at age 55. Based on our computation, we need to own total cash, including all money in savings, fixed deposits and EPF, which have total value of more than RM1mil.

The key principle here is we need to have cash reserves of more than RM1mil to be able to maintain our current lifestyle 20 years after retirement from age 55 to age 75. This is on the assumption that we can live up to 75 (the average lifespan of Malaysians).

Based on our computation (see table), if you are now 35 years old and your current monthly expenses are RM3,000 per month, assuming you are only able to generate a return of 3% (the return from fixed deposits) on all of your savings and the RM3,000 will grow by the average historical inflation rate of 3.5% per annum, you would need RM1.6mil when you retire at age 55.

This amount will be enough to maintain your current lifestyle for the next 20 years after your retirement at 55.

However, if you need to spend RM5,000, RM7,000 or RM10,000 per month, then you need RM2.6mil, RM3.7mil and RM5.3mil respectively at your retirement age of 55.

In short, you need to become a millionaire when you retire even if you only maintain a simple lifestyle after your retirement. You will not be able to use this money to buy a big luxury car or a bungalow, as you really need the money for the next 20 years.

Creating an outline is fairly easy if you know your subject well. If you know your subject, your mind will have already broken down your subject into separate, smaller topics. That is all an outline is - small topics that combine to form main points that combine to form an ebook.

Step #2 – Write An Introductory Paragraph For Each Point

Now that you have created your outline, you need to write an introductory paragraph for each point. This introductory paragraph should be 3-7 sentences. What you are doing in the introductory paragraph is connecting the previous and current points together. Step #4 – Write The Introduction and Closing

You have now completed the bulk of your ebook. You just need to go back and dress your book up. You know what your main points are and how each point will benefit your reader. Since you know exactly what is written in your ebook, you can easily write an introduction and closing.

Step #5 – Edit, Rewrite, and Clean Up

Once you have written the rough draft of your ebook, you need to set aside some time to clean it up. Look for good content, smooth flow, spelling, grammar, and broken URL links.
I caution you not to cheat yourself on the editing and rewriting portion of your ebook. Editing and rewriting is as important as writing. I usually edit my entire ebook at least 3 times. I know that I am writing good content, and I don’t want silly mistakes to take the shine off of my polished ebook.

Creating a table of contents is very simple to do, and it gives your ebook a professional and organized look. I Had A Plan

I would not have been able to write my first ebook in 3 days if I did not have a plan. How did I create my plan? I Had An Outline

I Had A Desire

The main thing that kept me going while I was writing my ebook was understanding the reward that would be coming. I Had Determination

Finding great sites on the Web is easy. But it takes hard work and dedication to find the truly annoying and dazzlingly useless ones. Of course we didn't shrink from the task.

While locating the most useful sites on the Web, we felt it only fair to call out the some of the most useless, too. We found no shortage of sites that are poorly designed or boring, but we list here some of the sites that go that extra mile -- the dazzlingly ugly, the patently offensive and the mind-bogglingly pointless.

AOL AIM Dashboard: I'll admit that Dashboard already has two strikes against it just because it immediately gets right into my face every time AIM starts up, which means every time I fire up my PC. Once this lame site has your eyeballs, the site seems willing to do anything to keep them, if just for a few seconds, using eye-candy graphics and tabloidy headlines like "High School Love Triangle" and "My Nasty Texts Went to my Dad!" Strike Three.

HavenWorks: If a Web-design program got sick and threw up, it might look something like this site. My uncle from Santa Cruz says the first time he saw it he had an acid flashback.

Juicy Campus: Juicy Campus provides a public place where college kids can engage in gossipy smear-fests against fellow students, teachers or anybody else, with complete anonymity. The tenor and intelligence level of the posts are, well, what you might expect from people who spend most of their time pulling bong hits, playing "Madden 2000," beer-sliding and vomiting up Night Train.

Zombo: A Web site? Concept art? A prank gone horribly wrong? I honestly don't know. Open the page and you will hear: "This is Zombo.com. You can do anything at Zombo.com. The only limit is yourself. Anything can happen at Zombo.com." Well, in fact, nothing happens at Zombo.com.

Brill Publications: It's virtual! It's like being in the real world, except, uh, it's on the Net! On the InterWeb! Walk through the front door of Brill Publications. See the secretary. Take the elevator. Talk to Bob on the fifth floor. Wait, why am I here?

City Optix: Sorry to pick on this little local optometry franchise, but sites that immediately launch and force you to watch ridiculously long, loud and inane flash presentations -- and there are many of them -- drive me nuts. This one is one of the worst examples of site design I've seen.

Digg: OK, Digg isn't a horrible site, but it is one of the most depressing when you compare it to what it once was. Digg's top stories (as voted on by Digg users) used to be interesting and tech-oriented. But since Digg has grown so immensely popular, the top 10 Diggs usually consist of "lowest common denominator" stories: funny photos and videos, for the most part. It's a site cursed by its own popularity.

Weekly World News: "The world's only reliable news" site is chock full of news you can't do without. A recent lead feature investigates whether James Carville or Britney Spears (bald) looks more like "Bat Boy." Why isn't CNN all over this?

Meet an Inmate: Life not creepy enough for you? Now you can befriend and correspond with a lonely ex-meth-addict doing hard time in Leavenworth for aggravated assault.

Bermuda Triangle: Stunningly bad graphics and site design are mixed with really pointless content. It's a double threat.

New Internet Millionaires are Still Emerging

Is the Internet still turning out millionaires? They must be, if I can believe the tons of messages I receive daily, urging me to purchase a product guaranteed to make me as obscenely rich as the guy trying to sell it to me claims to be. Some of these people even direct me to screen captures of their ClickBank affiliate accounts or to digital images of their bank accounts—all showing enormous balances. Hmm. Can you say, "digital editing"?

That aside, are real people making real money on the Net these days? Many claim to be, but whom can you believe? You know the old saying: On the Web, nobody knows you're a dog.

Recent Millionaires

A Google News search for "Internet millionaires" turned up a few reliable sources. According to Post-Gazette.com, in 2000, Manu Kumar from Pittsburgh sold his Oakland company, SneakerLabs, for a bundle. SneakerLabs, now part of E.piphany, is a Web site that lets people facilitate online meetings.

Only 25 years old at the time, Kumar was reported to have a net worth of $50 million. Kumar, as it turns out, was never your typical youth. He was memorizing entire textbooks at age 7; selling musical doorbells in New Delhi at the age of 14; designed a solar car at age 17; and at age 21, launched SneakerLabs on a student visa while at Carnegie Mellon University.

More recently, across the pond in the United Kingdom, Alex Tew, a 22-year-old student, made $1 million in four months with his Million Dollar Homepage . Tew sold tiny advertisements on his site, which became viral and attracted enormous traffic following his interview with the BBC. The unbelievable-looking site resembles a magazine rack containing hundreds of miniscule magazines. ABC news radio and Reuters TV in Times Square have also interviewed Tew about his various moneymaking ideas.

In 2006, a PR Web press release stated that Tellman Knudson from Vermont became a millionaire selling online help for people with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). After a string of bad luck and failed businesses, Knudson went from broke to millionaire in 12 months, and then became a multimillionaire in 24 months. Knudson explained his success by saying, "I uncovered the secret is to focus intently on my own skills. I love the Internet with a passion, and I love helping people experience success in their own lives."

In the Trenches

But what about the rest of us? To find out what's happening in the trenches, I loitered around the Warrior Forum , an online meeting place where Internet marketers hang out to network and swap war stories. Warrior Jeff Gardner, the president of Gardner Marketing Group Inc., of Mansfield, Texas, agreed to speak with me.

"Are people still becoming Internet millionaires?" I asked Gardner.

"Yes, absolutely," he replied.

However, Gardner said, you have to understand one thing. It's a misnomer to talk about having an Internet business. The Internet is a marketing and delivery method, but it is not a business. If you sell pet food, that's a business. If you market it online, that's a marketing method. Find a way to have your pet food downloadable, and that's a delivery method.

Gardner pointed to the 1900s, when people made millions of dollars in mail order—another marketing and delivery method. People predicted it would die out, but decades later, people are still making money with mail order, thanks to credit cards and other advances.
Similarly, Internet marketing has a rosy future. "I believe there are people in elementary school who are going to make a million dollars on the Internet," Gardner predicted. He expects to see technological advances that we cannot begin to understand now, and considers that in the future, there will be even more opportunity than there was five years ago.

"But, since everybody and his dog is trying to sell something online, doesn't that mean too much competition, and therefore, decreased opportunity?" I asked. In response, Gardner pointed to the weight-loss market as an example. Businesses have been selling weight-loss products for 100 years. We often hear people say they aren't going into the weight-loss industry because the market is saturated, yet every day we see proof that this is not the case. Although the market appears to be jam-packed with weight-control products, somebody comes along with a new diet, product or service and makes a fortune. The market is hungry for new weight-loss solutions.

The health and wellness industry is another good example of a "saturated" market that pays off big for those who know how to maneuver it successfully. A company entering this market with a new supplement, vitamin or other product can make millions of dollars.

Competition and Opportunity

Gardner pointed out that the increasing numbers of people on the Internet bring more competition, but also more opportunity. This growing number of people, coupled with technological advances, affords increased opportunity to tap into new markets—markets that can't be reached through direct mail, magazine advertising or television. In his opinion, those who say there are no opportunities on the Internet are taking a short-term viewpoint. "Over the next five or 10 years, there will be Internet advances that we cannot imagine," he mused.

According to Gardner, plenty of people are starting businesses that make six or seven figures in the first or second year. Some, like John Reese, become millionaires. Three or four years ago, John Reese sold an information product for $1,000. He made $1million in one day. Gardner likens this accomplishment to breaking the four-minute mile. For years, people believed it impossible to make $1 million in a day. Then Reese broke the barrier. Since Reese's success, many have brought in a million a day in online sales. There have been outstanding product launches that brought in $12 million within 24 hours.

Internet technology has reached a point where you can go online and find your target market, the people who are most likely to buy from you. And, since e-commerce has advanced to the point that many people are comfortable using credit cards online, these people have the ability and willingness to purchase.

As for people who claim the opportunity has passed, Gardner had an opinion. "I look at these people as making an excuse for not taking the first steps toward making money," he commented.

Google Alerts: Deploy Your Own Internet Spies

While this free Google tool is by no means new (launched in 2004), I’m constantly surprised by how many people not only don’t use it, but have never even heard of it. Let’s take a closer look at this wonderful tool and examine how it can save you time, spark ideas and help you stay ahead of the curve (and your competition)…

By definition, Google Alerts are simply e-mail notifications that list the latest and most relevant website pages, blog posts and videos that have been found by Google’s search engine spiders related to a particular search term or topic. Note that I included “most relevant”. This is important because if Google sent you EVERYTHING they find on a particular topic, this list could get out of hand real quick. They actually only send you the most relevant website pages, blog posts or videos that make it into the coveted top 20 search results. You can also specify the frequency in which you want to receive these e-mails (one a day, once a week or once a month).

So Why Should I Use Google Alerts?

Let’s get an example started so you can wrap your brains around the benefits. Say you’re a consultant specializing in training clients in the art of underwater basket weaving. As a specialist in this niche field, you obviously want to stay on top of the latest underwater basket weaving techniques, industry happenings and competitors that may be offering new services. And don’t forget that you will want to find out if your own internet marketing efforts are paying off in the form of other websites and blogs linking to you or using your name or company as an expert reference. All this is valuable information, but just imagine how many hours you'd have to spend surfing the web to find it all?

Let’s Get an Alert Started…Step By Step:

1. Go to http://www.google.com/alerts.

2. In the “Create a Google Alert” box on the right, insert your keyword in quotes, i.e. “underwater basket weaving training”. Using quotes will help ensure relevant results.

3. Select the Type of alert (news, web, blog, video, groups or comprehensive (all)).

4. Select your desired e-mail frequency.

5. Enter your e-mail address and you’re done!

6. And repeat…Enter your next keyword phrase, i.e. your company name, your name, a competitive company name, etc.

If you select daily notifications under the category of “web”, tomorrow you will start receiving the latest website pages that are being indexed by Google for your specific keywords/phrases. If you input very specific, niche terms, you may not get much on a normal basis. But if your keyword/phrase is more generic, you may find that you are getting too much and you need to refine your alert keywords.

After setting up a few alerts, here are some ways my small business clients have used the information to monitor their industry and improve their overall marketing efforts.

1. Keep Tabs On Your Own Internet Presence – Besides the obvious egocentric notion of this, Google Alerts are very helpful for monitoring your online reputation, backlinks (other websites that link to you) and search engine optimization efforts. For example, as you develop new content for your website, sign up for a new social networking website, or another website references an underwater basket weaving article on your website, all this content will eventually be indexed by Google. Alerts will notify you the day that it happens.

2. Keep Tabs On Your Industry – Whether you want the latest news and announcements related to your industry products/services, or you’re looking for opportunities that might spark new business, Google Alerts does the work for you.

3. Keep Tabs On Your Competitors – Spying on your competitors has never been easier. Creating alerts with their company name, products or services is a great way to find out what they’ve been up to. You can also find out in which forums, blogs or industry websites they are participating.

4. Get New Content Ideas – Do you provide industry news on your website or blog? Google Alerts brings you timely news and industry information that might just be the creative spark that you needed to write your next article.

5. Save Time Surfing – As I’ve already mentioned, Google Alerts’ e-mail notification functionality brings the most relevant content right to your inbox. No more long hours surfing the web looking for the latest happenings.

Using CommentHunt for Link Building

Creating backlinks to a site is common way to increase traffic and search engine ranking for a web site. One method of creating backlinks is to post comments on blogs. When blogs were first gaining traction on the Web, most blogs would accept comments, and any links in those comments would be considered viable backlinks. As a result, comment spam became rampant.

In 2005, Google introduced the "nofollow" attribute for links so that they do not pass along ranking influence to the target page. Presently, most blogs add the nofollow attribute for comments, thereby negating potential ranking benefits to commenters.

Many blog owners purposely eschew nofollow and allow comments links to pass influence (these are called "dofollow" links), though these are a small minority among all blog sites. Building links is an important part of online marketing, as it can direct targetted traffic to your site, but also improve your ranking on the three main search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN (Live)). It can also increase your PageRank, which is helpful toward how you appear in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). More likely though, it will help you if you happen to sell text links or blog posts. There are many ways to build links and here are just a few.
1. Submit Press Releases. A simple press release about your website’s launch can be released to several PR websites, who will then distribute it to various online news sites.

2. Reciprocal Links with Similar Websites. It is very important that you only exchange with sites that are highly related to your content. Google is stating that they view link exchanges as schemes to be avoided. You may not get much of value, other than potential targetted traffic. You can find link partners by emailing them directly or searching through webmaster forums, such as Digital Point Forum.

3. Comment on Other Blogs. Start commenting on relevant and popular sites in your niche. It is very important that you do not spam the comment section. Likely, the comment will be blocked or not approved. This will increase the likelyhood that the webmaster will implement ‘nofollow’ on their site and further comments will be of little or no value. Instead, write a relevant comment. Try to avoid using keyword names in place of your name when commenting. This will probably cause the moderator to not allow your comment. Again, if the comment is set to nofollow, the link will not count for most search engines.

4. Social Bookmarking/Voting Websites. Various social voting websites, such as Netscape or Digg have a high PageRank and can direct a lot of traffic your way. This is especially true if you publish content that is particularly interesting.

5. Forum Signatures. Sign up for as many forums of related content as you can find and that are active. Emphasis should be placed on forums that allow signature links, especially if they are not nofollow.

6. Create a Tool, Theme or Widget. Write or pay someone to write a useful tool and host it on your site. It could either reference your site in the widget, thus creating a backlink, or users may like it so much that they will link to it from their site or forum posts. Designing Wordpress or similar themes and placing your link in the footer is a great way of creating backlinks, as webmasters use them for their sites.

7. Submit your web site to Web Directories. This can be a very monotonous process, however it can possibly net you several hundred backlinks. An alternative would be to hire someone to manually submit your site to directories. The main ones to consider paying for would be Yahoo Directories and BOTW.com. You can also try to get it added to the DMOZ, but this can take 1-2 years!

8. Article Submissions. Write articles on your niche topic and submit them to article directories. At the footer of these articles would be your backlink. There is the potential that you will get some targetted traffic also from the readers of your articles, as they are published on related websites.

9. Blogs on Other Blog Platforms. Use your blogs or hire/find others to mention your site on their blog. You may get some targetted visitors and it will count as a backlink. In other words, if you have a network or simply one blog, you can link to your other sites. Another option is to find other bloggers and get them to do a blog post about your site. There are many people that will blog for a fee. Take a look at Payperpost.com, for example.

10. Squidoo Lenses. Making a Squidoo Lens is an easy process that could earn you some extra money, but more importantly, it counts as a backlink. A Squidoo Lens is basically a one page website that you can easily design via their helpful Squidoo Lens wizard. Your Squidoo Lens can be used to talk about a topic that you enjoy, a business, or a product. In addition, you can reference Amazon or Ebay products and earn a commission.
